POTTER ROAD LABOR CAMP
Talking One on One in the Labor Camp
Chavez could have easily reached Salinas the next day, but they had planned the big fiesta for Sunday, farmworkers’ one day off. So he rested, talked with aides, and spent the afternoon in a labor camp off Potter Road, on the outskirts of the city. He was at his best talking with workers one on one or in small groups, just as he had learned to do more than two decades earlier as an organizer. Instead of a rally on the eve of the big Salinas event, he met with workers, answered questions, and gave a preview of the speech he would deliver the next day.
Then the Teatro Campesino performed skits, to a wide-eyed audience.
