“Por la ley votar”
By the time the march neared King City, the crowds of onlookers had grown. Word spread that the caminata was approaching, and workers gathered to watch the march pass by and cheer. Volunteers handed out water.
In King City, more than 1,000 people crowded into the Monterey County fairgrounds to hear Chavez speak and watch the Teatro Campesino perform. Their skits delighted the audience, Chavez included. The Teatro also sang familiar songs with new lyrics – improvised to fit the upcoming election battles. Instead of “No Nos Moveran,” the Spanish version of “We will not be moved,” they sang: “Abajo con los Teamsters, y por la ley votar; ya, ya, por la ley votar’ (Down with the Teamsters, and vote for the law)
